Cultural events in Brazil feature cannabis documentary and Aki Kaurismäki retrospective

Curitiba will host the premiere of the independent documentary ‘Queimando Fronteiras’ at the Museu da Imagem e do Som do Paraná (MIS-PR) on September 19. The screening will take place in the space of the former Centro de Triagem as part of the ‘Projeto Cárcere’. The film, directed by Leonardo Ferron Baggio, explores the regulation of cannabis self-cultivation in Argentina and includes accounts from activists and specialists regarding drug policy changes in Latin America.

The event includes a guided tour of the ‘Desse Lado do Muro’ photography exhibition and a screening of the short film ‘Uma de Quinze – Maconha na Ditadura’, which examines cannabis repression during the Uruguayan dictatorship. A debate following the main documentary will address themes of incarceration, harm reduction, and human rights.

In Rio de Janeiro, the Estação Claro Rio and Estação Claro Gávea are hosting a retrospective of Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki from September 17 to 23. The program features 18 feature films, marking the first time these works have been shown together in Brazil. The retrospective includes acclaimed works such as ‘Fallen Leaves’ and ‘The Man Without a Past’, showcasing the director's signature style of social consciousness and minimalist dialogue.
