Algeria and Niger sign military cooperation agreement

Algeria and Niger have signed a military cooperation protocol in Algiers to strengthen security relations between the two nations. The agreement was finalized on October 21, 2026, following meetings between Nigerien Defense Minister General Salifou Modi and Algerian Chief of Staff General Saïd Chanegriha. Nigerien Defense Minister Modi was also received by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

While the specific terms of the protocol remain undisclosed, the move marks a significant rapprochement between Algiers and Niamey. This development follows a period of tension and follows a recent instance where Algeria deployed fighter jets to Niger in response to a mutiny in Niamey in August 2026. The agreement reflects a shift in regional security dynamics as Algeria seeks to bolster stability along its southern borders and strengthen ties with Sahelian neighbors.
