Cultural festivals celebrate ethnic traditions in Northwest Vietnam
Various cultural festivals are taking place across Northwest Vietnam to preserve and promote ethnic minority traditions. In Lao Cai, the second ‘Lao Chai Indigo Color’ festival featured traditional craft demonstrations. Additionally, the ‘Com Hop Thanh’ festival included the reenactment of the ‘Then pang mau’ ritual by the Tay people, a ceremony expressing gratitude to ancestors and praying for bountiful harvests.
In Lai Chau province, the ‘Colors of Lu Culture’ festival was held in Tham village, Khun Ha commune. The event highlighted the unique identity of the Lu ethnic group through traditional costumes, folk games, and the reenactment of the ‘Su khon khoai’ (buffalo soul worship) ritual. This agricultural ceremony reflects the spiritual connection between the Lu people and nature, honoring the buffalo as a vital companion in farming.
Other regional activities include celebrations of the Thai Xoe art, which has maintained its vitality since being recognized by UNESCO, and the Northwest Tourism Fair, which showcased local OCOP products.
