Cultural festivals in Lesotho and Botswana drive identity and economic growth

Cultural festivals in Southern Africa are increasingly being utilized as tools for both identity reclamation and economic development. In Lesotho, festivals such as the Morija Arts and Cultural Festival (MACuFe) and the Maletsunyane Braai Festival (MBF) serve as platforms for cultural resistance and the reconstruction of national identity following a history of colonial disruption.

In Botswana, Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Gaolathe emphasized the economic potential of heritage during the annual Mafifatshwana festival. Addressing the Batlokwa community, Gaolathe urged the use of cultural preservation to build economic resilience and self-sustenance. He noted that sustainable national transformation requires active community participation and the ability to turn local assets into productive ventures.
