Mexico and Nicaragua celebrate corn heritage and Day of the Dead traditions

Various regions in Mexico and Nicaragua are celebrating cultural traditions centered on corn and the Day of the Dead. In Nicaragua, Jalapa held its 43rd National Corn Fair, highlighting the crop's role in food sovereignty.

In Mexico, corn-related events include ceremonies at the Great Museum of the Mayan World and advocacy by Oaxacan organizations for the protection of native seeds against industrial agriculture. Authorities in Mexico also emphasized measures to protect native corn and ensure food supply through 2030.

Day of the Dead preparations are widespread. Jalisco is launching the ‘Festival de las Almas’ across 11 municipalities, while Xochimilco is offering specialized canal tours. In San Juan del Río, various contests have been announced, and Toluca is resuming legend-themed cemetery tours. Additionally, Jalisco is planning a 350 km pedestrian pilgrimage route, the Camino de San Máximo Confesor, to boost regional tourism.
