Cultural food celebrations in Argentina and Chile

Argentina observes Butcher's Day on October 19, a tradition rooted in 1961 when workers in Avellaneda established a date to commemorate the trade. This differs from Uruguay, which celebrates the profession on July 14 to mark the end of a month-long strike in 1965. The history of the trade in the region dates back to 1589 with the construction of the first cattle pens in Buenos Aires. Over time, the industry evolved from street vendors using carts to fixed establishments with marble counters.

In Chile, October 20 is recognized as Churrasco Day, celebrating the iconic sandwich. The dish, typically composed of bread, meat, avocado, tomato, and mayonnaise, is considered a staple of Chilean culinary heritage and an economical meal option. Various regional styles include the ‘Italiano’, ‘Chacarero’, ‘Barros Luco’, and ‘Brasileño’.
