Cultural heritage and architecture in São Paulo and Maranhão
In São Paulo, the Galeria Metrópole stands as a significant architectural landmark in the city center. Designed by Gian Carlo Gasperini and Salvador Candia through a collaborative process, the structure features a central courtyard, balconies, and multi-level circulation that integrate commerce, offices, and urban life. Located near the Mário de Andrade Library, the complex has historically hosted a large cinema and served as a vital commercial and cultural hub.
In Maranhão, the historic center of São Luís maintains a rich repertoire of supernatural folklore and legends. Historian Marcus Saldanha notes that local myths, such as the legend of Ana Jansen and the Enchanted Serpent, are deeply embedded in the collective memory of the capital. These narratives often reflect historical social and political dynamics, such as 19th-century power struggles, or stem from material vestiges like stones from the former English Cemetery.
