Cultural heritage celebrations held in Madeira, Covilhã, and Cape Verde
Various cultural commemorations are taking place in Portugal and Cape Verde to honor local traditions and heritage.
In Madeira, the Regional Directorate of Culture is marking International Intangible Cultural Heritage Day with a roundtable discussion titled “Património Imaterial: Vozes, Saberes e Práticas”. The event features representatives of local traditions, including the Calçada Madeirense and the Ash Procession in Câmara de Lobos, alongside traditional music from the Xarabanda Musical and Cultural Association.
In Covilhã, Portugal, an informal discussion led by industrial archaeology expert Jorge Custódio will explore the history of the wool industry, focusing on traditional processes such as dyeing and milling.
In Cape Verde, National Culture and Communities Day is being observed with several initiatives. The Ministry of Communities, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration, has launched the documentary “Morada di Sodadi,” which examines the history of Cape Verdean emigration and the experiences of the diaspora. Additionally, the Cultural Heritage Institute presented a catalog dedicated to the cimboa, a traditional musical instrument, at a secondary school in São Domingos to promote its preservation among younger generations.
