Cultural heritage initiatives in Italy focus on music and language

Various cultural initiatives in Italy are working to preserve intangible heritage, ranging from musical traditions to regional dialects.

The musical project ‘Al centro del presente: il patrimonio siamo noi’, promoted by the S. Antonio di Padova parish in Chiesuola, aims to highlight the musical contributions of local residents. The project involved volunteer singers and instrumentalists from Pontevico, Alfianello, Leno, Pavone del Mella, and Verolanuova. Key activities included a collaboration with the Christian pop group Gen Rosso and participation in the international Assisi Pax Mundi review.

Separately, concerns are rising regarding the decline of Italian dialects. While Italian serves as the national standard, the daily use of regional dialects has decreased significantly. According to 2024 Istat statistics, only 9.6% of people reported speaking exclusively or predominantly in dialect within the family, a sharp decline from 32% in 1988. This shift is attributed to the social integration provided by school, television, and increased mobility.
