Cultural heritage projects preserve bell history in Germany and Austria

Cultural institutions in Germany and Austria are implementing new ways to preserve and showcase the history of church bells.

In Dülmen, Germany, a new exhibition has opened at the einsA museum focusing on an early medieval bell casting pit. The exhibit features a detailed model of the archaeological find, explanatory panels, and films detailing the discovery. Experts, including archaeologist Dr. Gerard Jentgens, note that while the exact sound of the 1,200-year-old bells cannot be perfectly reconstructed, the exhibition provides insight into the historical craftsmanship and the connection between bells and music.

In Austria, the Glockenkundliches Institut Österreich has launched a digital online archive to document the country’s church bells as significant cultural assets. The archive includes images, casting years, inscriptions, weights, and audio samples. The Voitsberg district is the first in Austria to have its bell inventory nearly fully documented, covering 28 churches. The project aims to preserve the historical soundscapes of both existing and lost bells for future generations through 3D visualizations and digital records.
