Cultural heritage restoration and historical discoveries in the Czech Republic

In Valašské Meziříčí, the historic Galerie Kaple, located within the Žerotín Castle complex, has undergone facade repairs. The project focused on the north and east walls, which had sustained significant weather damage. The restoration cost 1.26 million CZK, funded by the city and a 500,000 CZK grant from the Ministry of Culture. The building, originally dating back to 1611, has transitioned from a castle chapel to a prison chapel before its current use as a gallery.

In South Bohemia, the Regional Museum in Český Krumlov has completed the relocation of over 90 tombstones uncovered by receding water levels at the Lipno reservoir. These stones belong to the submerged village of Dolní Vltavice, which was displaced during the construction of the dam in the 1950s. The museum plans to work with local organizations and descendants of the original inhabitants to determine how to present these artifacts at a cemetery in Černá v Pošumaví. The project aims to document the complex history of the region, which saw successive displacements of populations during the 20th century.
