Cultural leaders elected for upcoming festivities in Mexico and Carnival

In Charapan, Michoacán, Yohana Guadalupe Morales Mora has been elected queen of the 2026 independence festivities. She will be crowned on September 15, accompanied by princesses Maité Galván and Andrea Rincón. During the event, contestants focused on Purhépecha identity, with Galván addressing the ongoing struggle against discrimination toward indigenous women.

In a separate cultural event, the group “Las Tremendas” has named Tatiana Marset as their queen for the 2027 Carnival. Her proclamation is set for September 19, with the coronation following on September 27. The selection has faced scrutiny due to Marset’s familial connection to Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset. Group president Macarena Saldaña defended the decision, stating that Marset is an innocent individual and should not be judged by the actions of her relative.
