Cultural light and fire events held in Sweden

Various cultural initiatives involving fire and light are taking place across Sweden. In the Österlen region of Skåne, the traditional light festival ‘Österlen Lyser’ is scheduled for October 30 to November 1, 2026. Borrby has been named the ‘Light Village of the Year,’ serving as the festival's hub with an official inauguration featuring music and local activities. The event spans the countryside, including activities at Glimmingehus medieval castle and art exhibitions.

In Västerås, artist Andreas Pettersson has initiated a project titled ‘Någon som ser dig’ (Someone Who Sees You). A fire was lit behind the Västerås Art Museum to serve as a communal gathering point. As part of the PLATSMO research project, which examines how urban design can increase trust and health, Pettersson acts as a ‘fire warden’ for a 24-hour period. The goal is to transform a previously perceived unsafe area into a ‘power station’ of human connection through the symbolic use of fire.
