Cultural programs launched in Italian prisons

New cultural initiatives are bringing film and music into Italian correctional facilities to promote social engagement and expression.

In the Augusta and Piazza Armerina prisons, the “Libere visioni” project has commenced. As part of the 25th Magma International Short Film Festival and the 16th Festival of Communication and Archaeological Cinema, incarcerated individuals will serve as a jury. Participants will watch, interpret, and debate selected works to award a special prize. Each facility will also create an original artifact to serve as a symbol of recognition for the winning directors.

In Venice, the Biennale Musica project, titled “Musica Libera,” recently concluded at the Giudecca women's prison. The program involved musicians from College 2026 conducting workshops on songwriting, collective listening, and improvisation with inmates. The initiative culminated in a live performance in the prison courtyard, featuring spoken word, poetry, and singing, allowing participants to use music as a medium for expression.
