Cultural traditions and wine heritage in Mainz and Berlin
Cultural traditions and viticulture are being highlighted in different German regions. In Mainz, the city's long-standing Carnival tradition, often referred to as the ‘fifth season,’ continues to be a central part of local identity. With a history spanning over 170 years, the festivities include organized tours of the city's historical sites, such as the Carnival Museum, which preserves artifacts like costumes, medals, and traditional masks.
In Berlin, the Weingarten Berlin association is conducting grape harvests in the Prenzlauer Berg district. While Berlin's wine production had largely ceased after a severe frost in 1740, the association notes that climate change has shifted viticulture boundaries northward, making wine cultivation viable in the city once again. Local participants engage in harvesting grapes to maintain this historical connection to the city's past.
