Cultural trends: Dance showcases in Modena and the rise of aura battles
The Sparkling Project dance school held its annual showcase, titled ‘Mondi Paralleli’ (Parallel Worlds), at the Teatro Michelangelo in Modena. The performance featured 38 students aged 4 to 22, combining dance and spoken word to explore themes of memory, emotion, and transformation. The choreography drew inspiration from literary classics, including the ‘Divine Comedy’, ‘Little Women’, and ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’.
Separately, the ‘aura battle’ phenomenon, which originated in Suzano, Brazil, is spreading through Latin America and into European cities like those in Italy and Spain. These competitions involve participants facing off in public spaces to compete for charisma through poses, dance moves, and meme-inspired gestures. The winner is determined by the volume of the crowd's reaction. The trend highlights a tension between physical presence and digital reproduction, as participants perform live while being recorded by onlookers.
