Cumberland historic building damaged by fire; firefighter injured

A late-night fire on August 16 damaged a historic building in Cumberland on Vancouver Island, housing Dodge City Cycles and the Riding Fool Hostel. Cumberland Fire Chief Mike Williamson reported that while the building's structure remains safe, the interior and its contents were largely destroyed.

One firefighter was injured while working on the second floor of the building. The emergency response included 20 firefighters from Cumberland and 12 from Courtenay.

No hostel occupants were inside the building at the time of the blaze, as they were attending a poetry event at the Masonic Hall. Firefighters were able to retrieve personal belongings, including computers and passports, for five visitors from the United States. Nearby residents reported fleeing their homes after hearing loud noises and screams as flames emerged from the hostel.
