Cumilla police arrest auto-driver for rape and murder of schoolgirl
Police have arrested Sumon Mia, an auto-rickshaw driver, in connection with the rape and murder of 15-year-old student Jannatul Tazmin in Lalmai, Cumilla. The victim, a seventh-grade student, was found dead in a paddy field on October 8.
According to investigators, the suspect picked up Tazmin on the night of October 7, promising to take her home for a 300 Taka fare. Instead, he diverted the vehicle to an isolated area in Lalmai. During the ordeal, Tazmin attempted to send her live location to her father via WhatsApp, though he did not see the message immediately due to the late hour.
Sumon Mia reportedly confessed to the crime in court and has been sent to Comilla District Jail. Following his confession, police recovered the victim's iPhone from a location he identified. While the primary suspect has been apprehended, authorities are still investigating whether any accomplices were involved in the incident.
