Cundinamarca faces forest fires and water shortages

Cundinamarca is facing significant environmental and resource challenges due to forest fires and water shortages linked to the El Niño phenomenon. Between January 1 and September 13, 2026, the region recorded 828 forest fires, affecting approximately 3,140 hectares across 75 municipalities. The Gualivá province reported the highest number of fires in September, followed by Rionegro and Tequendama.

To combat the water crisis, Empresas Públicas de Cundinamarca (EPC) has launched an operational response plan investing over $185 million. This strategy includes technical solutions, material delivery, and the use of water tankers to support populations facing declining water sources. Initial interventions are benefiting over 16,000 residents in Pulí, Topaipí, and Viotá through pipe installations and continuous tanker operations. Additionally, approximately $100 million has been allocated to repair potable water infrastructure in Guayabetal following road and bridge collapses.
