Cundinamarca implements water harvesting and insurance programs

Authorities in Cundinamarca, Colombia, are implementing measures to mitigate the impact of the El Niño phenomenon and water scarcity. The Regional Autonomous Corporation (CAR) is advancing its "Cosecha de Agua Comunitaria" program, which aims to deliver 21,000 rainwater harvesting systems by 2026. This initiative includes the distribution of 11,000 kits in 2025, featuring storage tanks and collection accessories to support domestic, agricultural, and livestock activities.

Complementing these infrastructure efforts, the Government of Cundinamarca has launched a pilot parametric insurance program in collaboration with FINAGRO, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the UNDP. This insurance is designed to protect 521 small-scale producers in Villapinzón, Suesca, and Sesquilé. Unlike traditional agricultural insurance, this parametric model activates automatically when specific climate indicators reach predefined thresholds, allowing for faster access to financial resources during droughts.
