Cundinamarca sustainability programs divert textile waste and promote water reuse

The Corporación Autónoma Regional de Cundinamarca (CAR) has reported significant environmental and economic progress through its sustainability initiatives in Colombia. The ReModa program has successfully diverted approximately 38 tons of textile waste from landfills by reintegrating materials into new production processes. This circular economy strategy has engaged 203 initiatives, 54 companies, and 22 productive chains across 44 municipalities.

ReModa has also impacted local employment, generating 198 direct jobs, 95% of which are held by women. Participating organizations reported a 5% increase in green jobs, a 10% rise in productive capacity, and an estimated income growth of 10% to 15%.

In addition to waste management, the CAR is promoting water conservation through its “Ruta para la Preparación Climática” strategy. The agency recommends the reuse of greywater—wastewater from sinks, showers, and washing machines—to mitigate water scarcity caused by phenomena like El Niño. Since greywater accounts for 60% to 80% of household wastewater, recirculating it for gardening, cleaning, or toilet flushing can significantly reduce pressure on rural aqueducts and water sources.
