Cunningham Falls State Park reopens after rabid beaver attacks

Cunningham Falls State Park has reopened Hunting Creek Lake and surrounding areas following the closure of portions of the park due to rabid beaver attacks. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the reopening on Monday after extensive monitoring, including thermal surveys, trail cameras, and trapping, showed no evidence of additional beavers in the area.

The closures were initiated after two separate attacks: a 13-year-old was bitten while swimming on July 26, and a 19-year-old was bitten while fishing on August 5. Both beavers involved were killed and subsequently tested positive for rabies.

Meanwhile, portions of Seneca Creek State Park remain closed. An investigation is ongoing following a beaver attack on August 13, where the animal involved also tested positive for rabies. Closed areas include the Berryville area, the Route 28 parking lot, and associated river access points. The DNR advises visitors to maintain a minimum distance of 25 yards from all medium-sized wild animals.
