CUNY students receive free unlimited OMNY cards in new pilot program

The New York City Council has launched a pilot program providing free, unlimited OMNY transit cards to the first cohort of 700 City University of New York (CUNY) students. Funded by a $700,000 commitment in the city budget, the initiative aims to reduce financial barriers for low-income students who rely heavily on public transportation.

Selected students, who must meet specific criteria including Pell Grant eligibility and full-time enrollment, will receive unlimited subway and bus rides. The fall semester benefit runs from October 5 to December 25, while the spring semester will offer 120 days of unlimited rides starting January 28, 2027.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin noted that approximately 90% of CUNY students use public transit, often spending around $1,000 annually on commuting. Officials stated that high transportation costs are a significant factor in student attrition and academic absences.
