FIFA sanctions Leandro Paredes and AFA following World Cup final incidents FAST-MOVING

FIFA has issued severe disciplinary sanctions against several Argentine players and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) following incidents during the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. The sanctions stem from altercations that occurred after the match in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Leandro Paredes received the heaviest individual penalty, a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine. Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match ban and a $90,000 fine. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala received a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine, while Thiago Almada and Spanish player Gavi were each issued a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine.

The AFA was fined a total of $321,000 for various violations, including discriminatory chants, team misconduct, and security failures. Additionally, the AFA must host its next two home matches with a 50% spectator capacity limit. Of the total fine, $100,000 must be directed toward an anti-discrimination program. Some aspects of the financial penalty and capacity restrictions are subject to a probationary period.
