Curiosity Rover discovers rare pure sulfur crystals on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover has made a significant geological discovery on Mars after inadvertently cracking open a rock in the Gediz Vallis Channel on Mount Sharp. The fracture revealed bright yellow crystals of pure elemental sulfur, marking the first time native sulfur has been observed on the planet.

While sulfate minerals are common on Mars, the presence of pure elemental sulfur requires specific chemical conditions that researchers did not expect in this region of Gale Crater. Project scientist Ashwin Vasavada noted that the discovery necessitates a rethinking of past aqueous environments on Mars, as the find suggests unexpected genesis mechanisms in this landscape.

In addition to this discovery, the rover has been investigating a large-scale feature in Gale’s sedimentary record suspected to be an “erosional supersurface.” This feature represents a period where the environment shifted from depositional to erosional before returning to a depositional regime. Recent mission activities included Curiosity climbing a vertical exposure known as “Cerro Paine Grande,” reaching a tilt of approximately 24 degrees to conduct contact science and high-resolution imaging of the rock layers.
