Curiosity rover discovers unusual pits on Mars
NASA’s Curiosity rover has discovered unusual, wide, and shallow pits in the Martian soil that scientists cannot currently explain. The anomalies were identified while the rover was climbing through Valle Grande, a wide valley located at the base of Mount Sharp within Gale Crater.
While small cavities in Martian rock are common—often caused by the erosion of softer material around harder mineral nodules—these specific pits differ from previous observations. They are notably wider and shallower than typical features, and researchers have not found any obvious debris or objects that might have originally filled them.
To investigate the origin of these features, the science team utilized the rover’s Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) and Mastcam to capture high-resolution, overlapping stereo images. These images are being used to create three-dimensional digital terrain models to precisely measure the shape and depth of the pits, helping researchers determine if they were caused by erosion or a previously unidentified geological process.
