Curitiba authorities inspect Praça Osório trees after branch fall
The Curitiba City Hall has initiated an intensive inspection of trees at Praça Osório in the city center following the fall of a Guapuruvu branch during recent heavy rains and strong winds. In response to the incident, authorities are removing the affected tree along with three others that became unbalanced. These operations are expected to be completed by Wednesday.
As a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of merchants and visitors, the city has decided to suspend all fairs held at Praça Osório until the end of the El Niño phenomenon, which is projected to last until the first half of 2027. The municipal government plans to announce a new location for these traditional fairs to ensure continuity in a secure environment.
Marilza Dias, the Municipal Secretary of the Environment, noted that while the tree involved in the recent incident showed no prior signs of risk, the recent weather patterns necessitate a renewed, comprehensive inspection of all trees in the square. This follows previous maintenance efforts conducted since August, which included pruning and removing trees in 33 other central areas of Curitiba.
