Curitiba City Council considers Libras inclusion in municipal schools

The Curitiba City Council is set to vote on a legislative proposal to include Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as an extracurricular component in municipal elementary schools. The initiative, authored by Councilwoman Carlise Kwiatkowski, aims to establish guidelines for integrating Libras into the school system to foster inclusive environments and overcome communication barriers between deaf, hearing-impaired, and hearing students.

If approved and sanctioned by the mayor, the policy will be regulated by the Secretariat of Education and the Department of Rights for Persons with Disabilities. The framework includes provisions for continuous training programs, institutional partnerships for capacity building, and awareness campaigns regarding the importance of the language for social inclusion. The measure would take effect 120 days after its official publication.
