Curitiba invests R$6.9 million in urban gardens and releases housing‑deficit study

The municipality of Curitiba and Itaipu Binacional signed a R$6.9 million agreement to broaden the Conexão Alimentar programme. The funding will enlarge existing community gardens and create new urban cultivation sites, promote sustainable food production, environmental education, income generation and the rehabilitation of degraded public areas.

Separately, the Institute of Research and Urban Planning of Curitiba (Ippuc) presented a comprehensive analysis of the city’s housing deficit. Using CadÚnico data and geocoding, the study identified that high rental costs affect 88 % of families in need, with 56 000 families on Cohab’s waiting list, 40 000 of them in the lowest income bracket. The report mapped the distribution of improvised dwellings, precarious housing and rent‑burden across neighborhoods and called for targeted urban‑planning instruments to address the shortage.
