Curitiba launches Wolbachia mosquito release to curb dengue
On July 29, 2026 the municipal government of Curitiba began weekly releases of Wolbachia‑infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, known locally as "wolbitos", at Praça Professora Marli Queiroz de Azevedo in the Sítio Cercado district. The bacteria Wolbachia reduces the mosquitoes' ability to transmit dengue, Zika and chikungunya without altering the insect's appearance or involving genetic modification.
