Curitiba launches Wolbachia mosquito releases, Brazil expands dengue control
The municipality of Curitiba began weekly releases of Wolbachia‑infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes on 29 July 2026 in the Sítio Cercado neighbourhood. The 26‑week programme, coordinated with Wolbito do Brasil, the Institute of Molecular Biology of Paraná and the World Mosquito Program, aims to lower transmission of dengue, Zika and chikungunya. Mayor Eduardo Pimentel said the city had already cut dengue cases by 94 % in 2025‑2026 and that the new method complements traditional source‑reduction actions.
Other Brazilian cities are adopting the same approach. In Presidente Prudente, a year‑long Wolbachia project was closed after reporting a 99.89 % drop in dengue cases – 33 cases in 2026 versus roughly 30 000 the previous year. Parnamirim has started community mobilisation for Wolbachia releases in five neighbourhoods, planning mosquito releases after the engagement phase. The method uses the naturally occurring Wolbachia bacterium, does not involve genetic modification, and is considered safe for humans and the environment.
