Curitiba opens sustainable, self-service library

A new sustainable library has opened at the Rua da Cidadania do Cajuru in Curitiba. The project was developed by eight students from the Universidade Aberta à Pessoa Idosa (Unapi) as part of their final graduation work.

The library operates without a professional librarian, relying on a self-service system where users record their own loans on a spreadsheet. The collection includes approximately 250 books ranging from classics to children's literature, all donated by students and colleagues. To promote sustainability, the books are housed on shelves constructed from recycled materials, such as cleaned and painted pallets and fruit crates.
