Curitiba unveils multi‑billion‑real metro, VLT expansion and GeoRedus transport data platform

The GeoRedus platform, developed with Brazilian universities, NGOs and German cooperation, maps public‑bus routes in Curitiba and shows that 99% of users can reach health and education facilities within 300 metres (about a 3‑4 minute walk). The open‑source GTFS data is intended to support urban‑mobility planning and improve transparency.

Based on the National Urban Mobility Study, the city proposes to extend its public‑transport network from 114 km to as much as 206 km. The plan includes a 20.4‑km north‑south metro line costing up to R$16.9 billion, a comparable VLT alternative at R$5.9 billion, additional VLT corridors and five electric BRT corridors. Total investment is projected between R$11.7 billion and R$22.7 billion, aiming to serve more than 915,000 daily passengers, cut average travel time by 24% and prevent roughly 1,065 traffic‑related deaths each year.
