Currais Novos councilman indicted for sexual importuning

Lucieldo da Silva, a PSDB councilman in Currais Novos, has been indicted by the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Norte for sexual importuning against an intern at the City Council.

The investigation concluded that security camera footage, witness testimonies, and the victim's statement provided clear evidence of non-consensual, invasive physical contact. The police report describes the contact as occurring in the victim's gluteal region. The case has been forwarded to the Public Ministry to determine if formal charges will be filed in court.

During a council session on Tuesday, August 11, da Silva apologized, characterizing the incident as an “involuntary gesture” and claiming the accusations are a form of “political persecution.” The incident occurred amidst protests by women against gender violence within the legislative chamber. The City Council is expected to review the matter administratively and decide whether to refer the case to the Parliamentary Ethics Commission.
