Currency collecting trends rise in the US and Mexico
Numismatic interest is rising in both the United States and Mexico, driven by rare minting errors and commemorative designs.
In the United States, certain 1999 Georgia state quarter specimens may hold significant value for collectors, potentially reaching $10,000. This high valuation is attributed to a suspected manufacturing error where coins were accidentally struck using an experimental alloy intended for Sacagawea gold dollars. Collectors look for unusual golden or greenish hues, increased weight, and variations in thickness to identify these rare pieces.
In Mexico, a report from the Banco de México indicates that approximately 4.5 million people have become collectors of 20-peso commemorative coins. Interest is driven by unique dodecagonal designs, such as those celebrating the foundation of Veracruz or the centennial of Emiliano Zapata. Additionally, the 50-peso ‘axolotl’ banknote remains highly popular, with 3 million collectors holding these notes, which were recognized by the International Bank Note Society as the most beautiful banknote of the year.
