Venezuela Central Bank mandates interest on all bank deposits

The Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) has implemented significant changes to its monetary policy, effective September 15, 2026. A primary measure is the mandatory remuneration of all bank deposits, including checking accounts, which previously lacked guaranteed returns. New minimum annual interest rates have been set: 10% for sight deposits, 42% for savings accounts, and 46% for fixed-term deposits.

Economists suggest these adjustments aim to incentivize the holding of Bolívares and strengthen monetary policy amid expectations of increased public spending. However, the measures also include tightening the legal reserve requirement (encaje legal), which is expected to restrict credit availability for businesses and households. Analysts note that while these steps may help stabilize prices, they could also hinder economic growth by making bank intermediation more expensive.

Regarding exchange rate projections, economist Francisco Ibarra of Econométrica estimates the official dollar rate could reach approximately 1,270 Bolívares by the end of the year, with parallel rates potentially ranging between 1,400 and 1,500. Meanwhile, in other regional contexts, the dollar has seen fluctuations in Paraguay, Uruguay, Costa Rica, and Bolivia.
