Obsession becomes 2026's highest‑grossing horror film

Curry Barker’s low‑budget horror romance Obsession, made for roughly $750,000, has shattered box‑office records worldwide. The film earned $152.1 million domestically and $224.7 million globally, surpassing the $200 million milestone and becoming the highest‑grossing horror movie of 2026. Its fourth‑weekend haul of $25.6 million set the biggest fourth‑weekend ever for the genre, beating the previous record held by Blair Witch Project.

The success also broke studio history: Obsession is now Focus Features’ most profitable release, overtaking the 2019 Downton Abbey film. Internationally the film performed strongly in markets such as the United Kingdom ($13.8 million), France ($6.3 million), Australia ($8.7 million), the United Arab Emirates ($3.5 million) and Saudi Arabia ($0.9 million). In India it has grossed Rs 42.6 crore (about $4.4 million) after ten days, with a rapid second‑weekend increase that could push it toward a Rs 50 crore total.

The remarkable profitability – a return of over 300 times its production cost – has drawn attention to the potential of micro‑budget genre films and highlighted effective viral marketing tactics, such as social‑media “lovey” tags.

Overall, Obsession’s box‑office run demonstrates a rare combination of low‑cost production, strong word‑of‑mouth, and sustained audience interest across diverse territories.
