Cusco authorities investigate discovery of dog remains

Authorities in Cusco, Peru, are investigating the discovery of dozens of dog heads and other remains found inside plastic bags in a wasteland in the San Jerónimo district. Residents of the Villa Rinconada and Altiva Canas housing associations alerted officials after noticing a strong, foul odor emanating from the area.

Police and municipal officials are investigating whether the remains are linked to the illegal trade of meat unfit for human consumption. Miguel Atausupa, the Manager of the Environment for the Cusco Municipality, stated that an emergency meeting will be held with the Police, the Prosecutor's Office, and the College of Veterinarians to address the situation and enforce animal cruelty laws.

Colonel Carlos Guizado of the National Police confirmed that investigations are underway to identify those responsible. Witnesses have reported seeing a station wagon vehicle operating in the area late at night, suggesting a systematic disposal of the remains. Due to the remote location, the area lacks surveillance cameras, prompting police to increase patrols.
