Cusco faces 299 million soles budget cut in 2027 proposal

The Cusco region in Peru is facing significant social and political unrest following the release of the 2027 Public Budget Law project. The proposal includes a drastic reduction of approximately 299 million soles in budget allocations for the department.

Local leaders and social sectors warn that this cut will jeopardize essential infrastructure, rural school modernization, health services, and sanitation projects. Critics argue the reduction threatens regional development during a period of economic instability and limits the capacity to address emergencies, such as recent forest fires.

While the central government justifies the adjustments through fiscal criteria, local representatives have called for a unified defense of regional resources. Some sectors have also criticized regional and municipal authorities for a perceived lack of foresight, noting that the budget formulation process involves months of coordination with the Ministry of Economy and Finance that should have triggered earlier warnings.
