Cusco forest fires cause five deaths and massive land destruction

The Cusco region in Peru is facing a severe emergency due to a surge in forest fires. In the first nine days of October alone, 60 fires were reported, overwhelming the capacity of first responders and firefighters.

So far this year, the fires have resulted in five deaths, including an 11-year-old girl and her 18-year-old brother in the Pomacanchi district. The environmental and economic impact is extensive, with over 16,000 hectares of land affected and 31 homes destroyed. The fires have also caused significant losses for local communities, including the death of numerous livestock such as llamas and alpacas, and the destruction of vital grazing lands.

Active fires are concentrated in provinces such as Espinar, Acomayo, Chumbivilcas, Anta, Canchis, Canas, and Calca. Authorities have noted that certain areas, such as Chumbivilcas, lack fire stations, which complicates emergency response efforts. Climatic conditions continue to pose a risk for further propagation of the flames.
