Cusco mining and gas districts receive massive financial transfers

Ten districts in the Cusco region of Peru are receiving substantial financial transfers driven by mining activities and the exploitation of Camisea gas. These municipalities are located within the provinces of La Convención, Espinar, and Chumbivilcas.

In La Convención, Megantoni receives approximately S/125 million annually, while Pichari receives over S/114 million and Echarati receives more than S/66 million. In Espinar, the provincial municipality receives nearly S/100 million, with Coporaque and Pallpata receiving around S/13 million each. In Chumbivilcas, Santo Tomás manages over S/80 million, Livitaca nearly S/58 million, and Velille more than S/26 million.

While these transfers, which include royalties and canon, have increased this year due to mineral price trends, the intended goal of using these funds to close social gaps remains unfulfilled. Challenges cited include inefficient resource management, a lack of project prioritization, and the fragmentation of budgets into small-scale projects.
