Cusco residents seek aid to control forest fires
Residents in the Cusco region of Peru are calling for urgent government assistance to combat forest fires in the Chumbivilcas and Quillabamba provinces. In Chumbivilcas, fires in the communities of Chilloroya and Uchuccarcco are destroying grasslands and threatening local wildlife, including foxes, lizards, and vizcachas.
In Quillabamba, a fire near Mount Sarahuasi and the Potrero area is advancing toward the Santa Ana district. Local residents expressed concern that the flames are within 200 meters of nearby homes. While civil organizations and youth groups have mobilized to fight the fires, there are calls for the Army to deploy helicopters and specialized troops to assist in containment efforts.
