Customs official Xhever Imeri arrested for bribery in North Macedonia

Xhever Imeri, an assistant director in the Customs Administration of North Macedonia, has been arrested on suspicion of bribery and illegal influence. The arrest followed a citizen's report to the authorities.

Between April and September 2026, Imeri allegedly solicited and received a total of 17,500 euros. According to prosecutors, 7,500 euros were taken to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of an existing public procurement contract for the Customs Administration. An additional 10,000 euros were allegedly requested to influence a separate public procurement appeal process by manipulating technical specifications.

During the arrest operation, Imeri reportedly attempted to evade police by hitting an officer and a police vehicle with his car before throwing a bag containing the 17,500 euros out of a window. The Prosecution for Organized Crime and Corruption has requested detention for the suspect. The political party DUI has called for a broader investigation to determine if the funds were intended for other political figures or if the influence was exercised on behalf of higher-ranking officials.
