Customs officials seize 2 kg of gold at Chennai Airport
Customs officials at Chennai International Airport seized approximately 2 kg of gold, valued at roughly Rs 3 crore, from a Myanmar couple. The individuals, both in their 40s, arrived from Bangkok and reportedly concealed the gold bars inside their bodies to smuggle them into India.
The couple had claimed they were traveling to India for medical treatment, but they were unable to provide valid medical documentation. Authorities noted that gold smuggling attempts at the airport have seen a resurgence following the Union Finance Ministry's decision to increase the gold import duty from 6% to 15%.
In a separate incident at Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, a couple from Kerala was intercepted with 219.43 grams of gold jewellery worth Rs 28.87 lakh. The woman was found to be wearing and carrying the jewellery concealed in her purse and clothing after arriving from Sharjah.
