Custonaci council rejects tax‑relief plan for unpaid municipal taxes

On 31 July, the municipal council of Custonaci in Sicily voted against a proposal presented by the opposition group “Noi per Custonaci”. The measure, permitted under Italy’s Law No. 199/2025, would have introduced a “definizione agevolata” – a facilitated settlement of unpaid municipal taxes – allowing taxpayers to regularise debts without interest or penalties and to spread payments over time.

The opposition argued that the scheme would have increased municipal revenue, reduced litigation and provided relief to families and businesses facing economic hardship. The majority’s rejection was described by the opposition as a missed opportunity, and the group said it will continue to propose similar initiatives.
