Wildlife authorities seize exotic animals in Mexico and Argentina
Authorities in Mexico and Argentina have conducted separate operations targeting the illegal trade of wildlife and exotic species.
In Chihuahua, Mexico, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and the National Guard intercepted a passenger bus on Highway 45 near Samalayuca. Following a 911 call, officials discovered 95 animals being transported illegally, including 75 red-legged tarantulas (Brachypelma emilia) and 20 Mexican broken-back turtles (Kinosternon integrum). The animals, some of which were in poor health due to overcrowding in plastic bags and crates, are endemic to Mexico and protected under local and international regulations. Two individuals were arrested and placed at the disposal of the Federal Public Ministry.
In Cutral Co, Argentina, a raid conducted by the Environmental Crimes Division and provincial wildlife officials resulted in the seizure of three African hedgehogs, a firearm, and ammunition. The operation, which included a vehicle search, was part of an investigation into the illegal commercialization of exotic fauna. The business owner was detained, and the hedgehogs were transferred to the custody of provincial wildlife authorities for protection.
