Cutzamala System reaches 94% capacity in Mexico
The Cutzamala System has reached approximately 94% of its total capacity, marking a significant recovery following previous water crises. According to reports from the National Water Commission (Conagua), the three main reservoirs—Valle de Bravo, Villa Victoria, and El Bosque—are holding a combined volume of over 734 million cubic meters.
While the high storage levels provide a substantial buffer for the upcoming dry season compared to the critical lows seen in 2023 and 2024, water supply challenges persist for many residents in the Valley of Mexico and the State of Mexico. Many neighborhoods still rely on water rationing, wells, and pumping systems due to infrastructure deficiencies and distribution losses.
Experts note that if the system reaches 100% capacity due to continued rainfall, spillways are designed to manage excess water by directing it into natural riverbeds or utilizing it for hydroelectric power.
