CVG workers plan further protests over labor claims in Guayana
Workers of the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG) are planning further street protests in Ciudad Guayana, scheduled for Monday, September 28. The demonstrations, held under the slogan “Calle y lucha” (Street and struggle), are driven by a lack of response from management regarding claims for labor liabilities.
Recent mobilizations in Puerto Ordaz included road closures following a perceived refusal by leadership to meet with workers. Labor representatives from Sidor have criticized the company for prioritizing spending on social and recreational activities—such as a recent medical and wellness fair for athletes preparing for the 2026 Guayana Inter-Company Games—over essential worker needs. Protesters claim that despite reported investments in such events, employees lack adequate salaries, transportation, supplies, and benefits, including the recent removal of vacation plans for workers' children.
While the CVG and the Ministry of Ecological Mining Development organized a comprehensive health and social services day for active and retired athletes, union leaders have questioned the allocation of funds, alleging that resources are being used for political proselytism rather than addressing the economic grievances of the workforce.
