Blue-green algae triggers swimming bans in Germany and Poland

Authorities in Germany and Poland have issued warnings or bans due to the presence of toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in various bodies of water.

In Germany, the Liebl-See Nord in Parkstetten has been closed to swimmers following the detection of cyanobacteria, which thrive in high water temperatures. Health officials warn that ingestion or skin contact can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin irritation. Dogs are at particular risk of fatal poisoning.

In the Baltic Sea, toxic cyanobacteria have been confirmed near Rostock, Germany. While a formal swimming ban has not been issued for all areas, officials advise caution, particularly for children and those with chronic illnesses. Signs of infestation include bluish-green or olive-green streaks and cloudy water.

In Poland, several beaches on the Hel Peninsula and the Danzig Bay, including Jastarnia Leśna, Jurata Międzymorze, Gdynia-Redłowo, and Mechelinki, are currently under strict swimming bans due to heavy algae blooms.
