Cyanobacteria Growth Conditions and Ancient Red Algae Offer Evolutionary and Environmental Insights

Cyanobacteria thrive in warm, nutrient‑rich waters with ample sunlight, especially where phosphorus and nitrogen are elevated, conditions that can lead to rapid blooms and harmful algal events. Their adaptability spans diverse habitats, from lakes and oceans to extreme environments such as hot springs and deserts.

Research led by Rutgers evolutionary biologist Debashish Bhattacharya shows that ancient red algae of the class Cyanidiophyceae dominate scalding, acidic hot‑spring ecosystems, acting as primary producers that sustain microbial communities. The study, based on samples from Yellowstone National Park, highlights how these algae’s heat‑ and acid‑tolerant enzymes could inform biotechnological applications in pollution cleanup and industrial processes, while also providing clues to early Earth ecosystems.
