Cyber insurance guidance for rising digital crime
As cybercrime rates rise, consumers are evaluating the necessity of specialized cyber insurance. According to a study by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the police, approximately 22 percent of people in Germany were victims of internet crime in 2025.
Experts suggest that before purchasing a dedicated cyber policy, individuals should review their existing coverage. For example, high-quality private liability insurance may cover damages caused to third parties through internet use, such as the accidental forwarding of a virus. Additionally, some household insurance policies may cover financial losses from online fraud or costs associated with data recovery following physical damage like lightning strikes. Legal expenses insurance may also offer protection regarding disputes related to internet crime, depending on the specific terms of the contract.
